Formal Letter Format



formal letter format, business letter writing format, proper letter format Formal Letter Format- Modified Block and Semi-Block
There are 4 different formal letter formats.

  • Block Letter Format

  • The entire letter is left-justified, and single spaced. There is one line space between paragraphs.

  • Memo

  • Used for internal office communication.

    It follows a simple format Date:

    To: List the recipient‘s alphabetically.

    From: Write the name and title

    Subject:

  • Modified Block


  • Sender‘s address, date, complimentary close and signature block in aligned towards the right. There is one line space between paragraphs.

  • Semi-Block or Indented


  • Almost the same as Modified Block, except that the paragraphs are indented. There is no space between paragraphs.

    • Sender’s address and date is right justified, or aligned towards the right of the page.


    • The body (paragraphs) is left justified, with a blank line separating each paragraph.


    • Complimentary close, and the sender’s signature block (including the name, signature, and designation) is also right justified.

    The indented or semi-block business letter format is almost the same as modified block, except for two differences:
    • You need to indent each paragraph.
    • There is no space between the paragraphs.
